The Upper Primary Science syllabus was developed to meet the requirements of the Revised National Policy on Education (RNPE, 1994). It aims at helping learners improve their science process skills and develop systematic procedures for exploring the environment, and explaining events and phenomena.
Furthermore, this syllabus equips learners with the key scientific facts and concepts to enable them to changes their environmental conditions to suit their lives.
AIMS OF THE UPPER PRIMARY SCHOOL SCIENCE PROGRAMME
Develop desirable attributes such as curiosity, creativity, assertiveness, self esteem, open-mindedness, respect for the environment and ones own life.
Develop awareness on the interrelationship between science, technology and society in everyday life.
Develop desirable attitudes towards and appreciation for different types of work and the ability to assess personal capabilities/weaknesses and achievements.
Acquire knowledge, skills in and appropriate attitudes towards food production and industrial arts
Develop skills such as numeracy, literacy, communication, adaptability, and problem solving for further learning and vocational preparation.
Acquire critical thinking, problem solving and enquiry skills.Topics that will be covered in this subject are:

What is a compound?
Its a combination of two or more elements in a fixed amount.
What is an element?
It is the purest, most simple form of a substance.
What is matter?
It is anything that occupies space and has mass.
What is evaporation?
A change from a liquid to a gas or vapour.
What is a symbol?
Letters, numbers or signs used to represent some. Example, the symbol O is reprenting Oxyen.
Define a term transparent.
It a anything that can allow light to pass through.
What is thermal?
It is anything relating to heat.
What is kinetic?
It is anything related to movement.
What is conduction?
It is the movement of heat from one object to another through solid particles
What is convection?
It is the movement of hot matter.
What is opaque?
Something that does not allow light to pass through?
What is mirage?
It is an effect caused by hot air that makes your eyes see something that is not there.
What is popolation?
It is a group of one type of animal or plant in an area.
What is a natural resource?
Natural resources are all things created by God e.g. plants, trees, animals, soil, air and water.
What is waterborne?
Things that are carried by water.
What is meant by food chain?
The plants and animals that form a chain in which plants are food for animals, and these animals are for for other animals.
What are producers?
Plants or animals that produce for for other animals .
What is an Alkali?
It is a chemical substance that is the opposite of an acid.
What is an acid?
It is a chemical substance that have a sour taste.
Define the neutral.
Neither acid or alkali.
What is litmus paper?
It is a paper that is used to show whether a substance is an acid or an alkali.
Define the term corrosive.
Able to destroy something e.g. acid destroying a metal.
